Make a Box Cake Taste Like a Baker’s Cake

Most box cake directions call for water, oil and three eggs. Using milk, butter and four eggs instead of three provides the cake with the richness and moisture of one made from scratch or by a baker.

The recipe I made for this post uses Strawberry Cake Mix, Cream Cheese Frosting and Red Sugar Crystals for garnish. Any number of flavors can be used and paired together. This post is more about turning box cakes into a must-eat-treat than a specific combination of sugary flavors.

Now go make a cake!

Ingredients

  • 1 box (15oz.) Cake Mix
  • 1 C Milk
  • 1 stick Butter melted
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 can (16 oz.) Frosting

Step 1

Mix Batter
In a large bowl, stir together cake mix, milk, butter and eggs. Once well combine, beat with a mixer on medium for two minutes – adding volume and thickness to the batter.

Step 2

Bake
Preheat oven to 350°
Pour batter into a prepared 9 x 13 pan. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Remove from oven, and let cool completely, then carefully remove cake from pan.

Step 3

Decorate
Trim or cut top of cake and make flat if necessary. Flip and place on a serving tray bottom-side up. Spread a layer of frosting over the cake and garnish with decoration if desired. Slice and serve.
