My first craving for sweets came at a young age.
At Christmas, my mom would make several treats to fill up trays to take to holiday parties. Of all the treats she made, one stood out early on: Rice Krispie’s Treats – they were my original sugar rush – before I was old enough to realize what a sugar rush was.
There were no visions of sugar plums dancing in my head, it was snap, crackle and pop covered in gooey marshmallow.
As I got older I began to notice that other mom’s made their Rice Krispie’s Treats different. Some topped theirs with a layer of chocolate and others had a peanut butter flavor. It was like sprinkling diamond dust upon solid gold. I loved the variations as much as the original.
Now that I am older, my sweet tooth has evolved and I rarely crave Rice Krispie’s Treats now, but when I do, I like to go off script. Which brings me to my current crispy rice offering.
For this version, I simply substitute half the crispy rice with cinnamon rice chex to add cinnamon to the overall flavor. White morsels are also included to bump up the sugary richness.
The result is a cinnamon sugar- crispy rice treat that will sooth a sugar tooth all year long but the cinnamon twist makes them especially fitting around the holidays.

Cinnamon Crispy Rice Treats
In a large pot over medium heat, melt butter. Add marshmallows and stir until melted and smooth, three to four minutes. (Directions for Microwave – Heat 30-seconds on high in a microwave safe bowl, stir, then repeat until marshmallows are completely melted.)
Remove from heat and immediately add in crispy rice cereal, cinnamon chex and white morsels – mix until well combined.
Pour mixture into a prepared 9×13 pan, spread evenly. Garnish with mixed color nonpareils, let cool, cut into squares and serve.
